Brovo Tacoma Punk Spicy Orange Aperitif

Brovo Tacoma Punk Spicy Orange Aperitif

Brovo Tacoma Punk is the accident that became a product — and one of the most genuinely original aperitifs made in America. The origin story is as punk as the name suggests: a major airline approached Washington State's Brovo Spirits about creating a signature cocktail for their first and business class cabins. Brovo made a custom blend — equal parts unsweetened Orange Curaçao and their own Amaro #4, sweetened with a eucalyptus-infused cane syrup — and shipped samples. Then the airline's beverage director left and the program died with him. But the tank of product remained, and Brovo liked it too much to waste. Named after Patrick Haight, the Tacoma bartender who helped develop Amaro #4, the liqueur is a Menza Menza — "fifty-fifty" in Italian — that brings together the round, vibrant orangeness of the Curaçao with the bitter herbal complexity of the amaro. The result is something genuinely unusual. A rusty amber hue leads to allspice and citrus on the nose, while the palate opens with woody notes and vibrant orange before flickers of hibiscus, grapefruit, eucalyptus, cinnamon, clove, and cayenne build progressively hotter with each sip — finishing with lingering bitter orange and a spicy cayenne fade. Wine Enthusiast called it an unusual take of interest to those who embrace fiery flavors. Brilliant in a spicy spritz, a Margarita riff, or anywhere you want orange heat rather than orange sweetness.
